Then, pan the map to bring the country into view and trap on it. A pop-up will ask to download data for the country you tapped on. Or go to EasyVFR 4 menu -> Download menu -> Country Select.

What’s new with version 4.0.962?

We are excited to announce a new update, which is the start of a new chapter in EasyVFR development. You will be happy to learn that in the coming months, we will focus on improving both the user interface and the usability of the core features of EasyVFR. This will eventually lead to some more exciting releases this Spring!

Status Card

So what are we on about? As you are probably aware, giving you peace of mind is our primary company mission. To use an app as your navigation tool, you want to be sure that all boxes are checked and all the lights are green. And you want to be notified immediately if the reliability of the app has been impaired.

Until recently, this critical information was scattered around several menus in EasyVFR. Now with the new Status Card, you will find all those boxes to check, in one single place.
You open the Status Card by tapping the new Status Dot, which is permanently shown over the map, and has three statuses:

• Green Checkmark: all ok.
• Orange Circle: within margins, but something can be done.
• Red Exclamation mark: alert, action is required.

From here, you can see in a glance what data needs to be updated, and you can initiate an update immediately. Furthermore, the status card is the easiest way to change the settings of each individual data component. So you can quickly take action without the need to browse to other menus.

Leg Labels

To increase your situational awareness we have also implemented route labels. They inform you about the leg direction, course, duration, distance, and altitude in the blink of an eye.
When flying, the estimated time to your next waypoint is based on your current ground speed. While the duration for the legs ahead is based on the planned values (your aircraft profile and wind) to create extremely accurate estimates.

Route Totals

When you are preparing or navigating a route, seeing at one glance the total duration and distance to fly can be very helpful. Therefore you will now find the new Route Totals displayed on your screen in a convenient place.

User Interface and Experience

The structuring and styling of the Status Card, labels, and route totals are a big change from the other menus and tools within EasyVFR 4. It is more modern, streamlined, and user-friendly. With every upcoming update, another core feature or menu will get this same treatment and be lifted to the new design philosophy.

Other improvements in this update

In the below list you can find the other new tools and improved features, all on popular request by the community. Thank you all for your suggestions and feedback! Your input really helps us to prioritize development and to make EasyVFR 4 better every day.

• Duration Unit: You can customize the unit per value at EasyVFR 4 menu -> System -> Units. For the leg and route total duration a new unit is added. Timespan Unit, which the options hh:mm, minutes and seconds.
• Recenter and Compass Dot: The North-Up/Track-Up button and Vertical Profile button are refreshed.
• Relative Terrain: Another useful improvement is in the Relative Terrain Colouring when flying in mountainous terrain. Now terrain between 0 and 700 ft below your current altitude is colored in gradient color from red to yellow with a bit of transparency. This way terrain that is above you stands out more with a dark solid red and are valleys easier to recognize.
• Performance and Stability:  Loading of large routes is now faster and more stable. Several fixes and changes address several specific use cases.
• Clean up:  To clean up the EasyVFR 4 menu. Every setting that is now accessible via the Status Card is removed from the EasyVFR 4 Menu: Download of individual data types; GPS Settings; Traffic (Electronic Conspicuity) Settings.

What's new with 4.0.929?

Since the last public release in April a lot has happened. With this blogpost I would like to inform you about the major new functionalities rather than just a boring summary of bug fixes.

In map VFR Arrival and Departure routes

Planning a flight the old fashioned way can make you drown in an ocean of information. Provided in many forms and shapes as ICAO charts – VFR plates – AIPs- SUPs – NOTAMs – AUPs, and many more regional sources. Not to mention all the variations between countries and airfields in map design, procedures, where to find what, and even local habits.

EasyVFR 4 makes your life easier by bundling, filtering, and linking all sources in one convenient app. Recognizing what is relevant for the day of the flight, the selected aircraft, forecasted weather, airspace reservations, personal preferences, and the planned route.

To do this job best, EasyVFR 4 can benefit from all the aviation information we can provide on top of what it already uses. That is why we started this year a new data project. To enhance our existing validation processes, exploring new official sources, and rethinking how users can benefit from this effort.

Via a series of EasyVFR app and AeroData updates in the coming period, you will get access to a lot of new sweets. Starting in today's public release with Arrival and Departure routes within EasyVFR 4!

With this new version we introduce a new airfield information layer. Starting with Arrival and Departure routes for all airfields that have a VFR reporting point. Germany, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, and France are available right now and the other European countries will follow soon.

Next up for the new airport layer are: Traffic circuits – Ground objects like taxiways, runway holding points, windsocks, fuel stations, ATS office – and more. Parallel to that effort, a variety of new airspace and inflight-related layers will be added. Soon more about this.

Update All Data to see the new layers

After updating to 4.0.929 you only need to update all data within the app to start seeing the new layers.

To manually update all data go to: EasyVFR 4 menu -> Downloads menu -> AeroData Validity Info -> To update, tap on .

The new airfield layers become visible when you zoom in on an airfield.

Logbook Improvements

The logbook feature in EasyVFR 4 has our constant attention to become more user friendly, reliable and automated. With this public release,, several new tools that have been tested by the beta testers become available for all EasyVFR 4 users.

• When a logbook entry is created and more than one possible arrival or departure airfield is found, then the nearest one suitable to the current aircraft profile settings will be chosen.
• Logbook creating now analyses for touch & goes as well.
• More reliable cloud synchronisation.
• After landing statistics pop-up.

Cloud synchronisation

Until now the logbook system was a simple file-based system that didn’t allow for merging of entries from multiple devices and was vulnerable to corruption and accidental deletion. With this new version we introduce a server-based system that eliminates these drawbacks.

Because logbook entries also contain breadcrumb data and are privacy related, we designed the system so that the user has to opt-in first to use this new logbook system:

1. At the initial opt-in any existing logbook entries on the device shall be uploaded to the new server system.
   EasyVFR 4 menu -> Flightlog Maintenance -> Store on EasyVFR cloud.
2. All other devices using the same account then automatically merge with the server entries as soon as option has been turned on for these devices as well.
3. From then on any change made on any of the devices will automatically replicate to the other devices.

After landing Flight Statistics pop-up

Logbook entries are now automatically created when EasyVFR4 detects the flight is completed, and will show a flight summary during taxiing or when parked. This flight summary can be closed manually, but it will also close automatically when shown for more than 5 minutes.

UK CAA style airspace theme

The UK CAA Style airspace depiction is now available with EasyVFR 4. To switch map themes, go to:
EasyVFR 4 menu -> Moving Map -> Select AeroData Charting Theme.

10NM distance marker

A 10NM distance marker will be shown together with the trackline when in flight mode. The purple dots on the trackline mark a 2 minutes interval. The new 10NM marker is the blue white line on the trackline.

Other improvements in this public release

• Using Menu -> System -> Units -> it is now possible to select between Decimal Degrees (DDeg), Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS) or Degrees decimal Minutes (DDMin) for latitude/longitude displays.
• Google Maps Tiles now have an extra level added so when zooming in a bit more detail is obtained.
• Import of route files created by many 3rd party flightplan apps is now added.
• When using a traffic device like PAW, SkyEcho, Flarm etc then regardless of whether the traffic and own ship are on a collision course, the target will be be depicted using the amber colour instead of the default grey to stand out more if lateral distance to target divided by combined speed is less than 120 seconds.

New inflight Audio & Voice notifications

After many requests from you, we have now implemented vocal airspace information to EasyVFR 4! This can come in handy if you are looking outside the cockpit, watching out for other aircraft, and enjoying the view. This vocal information also includes a leg change notification. It will tell you your new heading, altitude, and what the name of your next waypoint is. To enable these voice messages: go to the EasyVFR 4 menu, then to ''Alarms and Warnings'' and finally to ''Voice''.

At and around airports

Imagine departing or arriving at an airport. During these two critical phases, you don’t want to be distracted by (vocal) warnings about airspaces you are about to enter as you have done your flight preparation correctly. Therefore we now have the option to auto suppress airspace warnings when within a given distance of your departure or arrival aerodrome that belong to your planned route.

Runway extension

Speaking of arrivals, we have added the option to turn the runway feathers on or off within ”Map Layers” and then ”AeroData”. However, if you mark a runway in ”QuickInfo” and then ”Airport” by tapping on its ident, EasyVFR 4 will render the specific runway extension feather regardless of the ”AeroData” setting.

New regions added

Currently, most countries are slowly opening again after their lockdowns as more and more people are getting vaccinated. With that in mind, we can start planning our holidays, but where to go? Well, as pilots we of course always want to fly, especially on holidays, so you could consider Bulgaria and Greenland as we have added those countries to EasyVFR 4!

Fuel at and around airports

The last thing I would like to mention is the fuel type shown on the map. Depending on the fuel type your aircraft (profile) uses, the availability of this fuel type is from now on shown on the EasyVFR map. If no aircraft profile is selected, all fuel types will be shown for each airport. In this way you are not bothered by seeing fuel types you don’t need. In case you don’t want to see the fuel type(s) on the map, you can simply turn this option off within the ”Map Layers” followed by ”Aerodata” just like with the Runway feathers.

Knowing your totals in flight

Time flies when having fun, so to know how fast time has ''flown'' you now can see your actual flight time (and distance flown) as route totals within the route window.

And when your flight is done, you don't have to manually convert bread crumps into a logbook entry as this will be done automatically for you.

For Dynon SkyView users

As we got a lot of questions from Dynon users, we decided to give the exchange center an overhaul. With this overhaul, one of the biggest changes we made is that we made an ''all or nothing'' operation from the approach charts that are downloaded from the Dynon Exchange window. When the Dynon Sync is done, EasyVFR will make sure all approach plates for all selected countries are downloaded, regardless of how long it takes. You as a user have no influence on this anymore. Furthermore, we fixed several issues like plates that would not be copied to your memory stick if you added a new country, but not updated your EFB. Also, never-ending download instructions experienced by some users are now part of history.

Apple are working hard towards a release of a new version of the operating system for your iPad or iPhone (iOS). iOS 14 is currently in beta, meaning it's being tested but may still contain issues that need attention before it can be fully released to everyone.

We have tested both EasyVFR 3 and 4 on the latest iOS 14 beta version, and we haven't found any problems at this time. However, when you are using an external device to receive traffic, GPS, routes, weather or data from a flight simulator, a new type of privacy permission is now required. Below you will find the workaround for both EasyVFR 4 and EasyVFR 3.
For the rest, EasyVFR runs fine on iOS 14 as far as we can now tell, though there may still be changes in the final (Golden Master) version.

If you rely on an iPhone and/or iPad for flight planning and navigation with EasyVFR, it might be a good idea to disable automatic updating of iOS on those devices temporarily, so to prevent nasty surprises just before take-off.

Turn automatic iOS updates off.

Turning that automatic update off, for now, is quite easy to do. Tap Settings, General and on the right-hand side tap Software Update. At the bottom of the page is an option which allows you to turn automatic updates off. You can always switch it back on in the same way.

Set permission to connect to a device via a local network.

This is required reading for everyone who connects to an external device using wifi to receive traffic data, GPS, routes and weather such as SkyEcho 2, Stratus, Dynon SkyView,  FLARM, or xConn, XMapsy and so on.

While testing EasyVFR 3 and 4 combined with iOS 14 beta we discovered that iOS 14 does not automatically display the "Find and connect to devices on your local network" pop-up. Obviously, we will release an updated version of EasyVFR so that question will pop-up automatically. Until then, we have found a workaround so you can trigger the permission yourself.

When an app listens over the UDP protocol nothing happens. But as soon as you let it listen over the TCP protocol, iOS 14 shows the "Find and connect to devices on your local network" pop-up where the user can give his permission. In EasyVFR we can use this as a workaround to trigger the permission pop-up.

Workaround for EasyVFR 4.

1. Connect the device that runs EasyVFR 4 to the local wifi network of your external data sending device.
2. Go to EasyVFR 4 menu -> System -> Electronic Conspicuity Settings -> FLARM ButterFly/AirConnect.
3. Enable "Monitor for FLARM equipment".
4. Tap in the first pop-up. Tap in the second pop-up.
5. Disable "Monitor for FLARM equipment" again.
6. Done! Now you can receive data via a local network.

Once the permission is given, the apps should be listed in the iOS local network settings: iOS/ macOS Settings > Privacy > Local Network.

Workaround for EasyVFR 3.

1. Find the IP address of the device that is the host of the local network, typically a router. Most of the time it is the local wifi network's IP address ending in a 1, something like : 192.168.xxx.1
2. With EasyVFR 3 go to Menu > Nav Tools -> Settings -> FLARM Settings.
3. Enable "Use FLARM" and enable "FLARM GPS as EasyVFR GPS".
4. At "WiFly IP Address:" set the IP address from step one.
5. Make sure that "Used protocol" is set to "TCP".
6. Tap . Then tap .
7. Tap in the pop-up at .
8. Now you can disable the "FLARM settings" again.

Dear beta testers,

Since our last newsletter, a lot has happened in the world. We hope that you are healthy and weren't overly affected by the steps taken by almost all countries in the world to fight COVID-19.
Now that most European countries, albeit with a few restrictions, do allow GA flying again, we hope that you've had the opportunity to get back in the air, or will be able to do so soon.

How to combine all these sources in a simple flight plan?

The EasyVFR headquarters are at Lelystad Airport (EHLE) in the Netherlands, which is one of the busiest GA airfields here. Since a week or two, we are back at the office after having worked from home for fifteen weeks. It's a joy and a true inspiration to be back here, being able to work in the same hanger as colleagues, being surrounded by roaring engines from all kinds of aircraft and a thriving aviation community.

During the lockdown, we were forced to evaluate the release and development roadmap for EasyVFR 4. The saying Never waste a good crisis to us meant that we took the opportunity to spend full-time work on a, for the European VFR communities unique, idea. Today we are thrilled to share with you, as one the first EasyVFR 4 users, our exciting news - before everyone else.

In the past months, the number of features, ease of workflows and vector map performance have been tested, optimized and redesigned in order to get EasyVFR 4 on track before announcing our biggest surprise yet. In version 4.0.742 you could already see a small part of that work. Now we are ready for the real thing, and starting from EasyVFR 4.0.765 we will gradually invite more and more of the existing beta testers to it.

What is this AUP your talking about?
EasyVFR 4 now supports airspace (de)activations per Airspace Use Plan ('AUP')!
In a growing number of countries, the AUP is or is becoming a supplemental way with a fairly high time resolution of enabling and disabling airspaces. Via a direct and secure link with Eurocontrol, EasyVFR 4 can now also dim and highlight airspaces that are switched on and off per AUP. This means that if a particular airspace is only active from 10:00 until 12:00 by AUP, EasyVFR will show it as active in that timespan only! To our knowledge, no other VFR flight planning and navigation app has this feature.

When will I get the AUP Data in EasyVFR 4?

The AUP feature is currently only available for all beta testers who started at or before May 15th 2020, until we optimized the usage of this data. We will let you know as soon as we are ready to add it to your license - again, at no charge.

With this version, manually searching and combining all different sources that manage the airspace activations is no longer required.
The unique EasyVFR 4 SmartMap does the job for you.
Only see airspaces that are active and relevant for your trip.

4.0.765 Big performance boost
The latest phones and tablets like the OnePlus 7T and iPad Mini 5 were already quite fast at running EasyVFR 4. With the new update, you'll find that all other supported devices are now noticeably faster when panning and zooming the map. In our tests, we see between two to five times faster map rendering. That's quite a bit!

Four major safety concerns identified for
EASA GA Safety Award 2020

Weeee! We're proud as a peacock for being a winner in the very first EASA GA Safety Award with our brand new EasyVFR 4!! We hereby congratulate our fellow winners Open Glider Network and FlyTool with their success.

"The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is pleased to announce the winners of its first General Aviation (GA) Safety Award. The GA Safety Award recognises the most safety-beneficial smartphone/tablet application for use by GA pilots."

"The apps submitted were assessed against their ability to address one or more of the four major safety concerns identified in the European Plan for Aviation Safety (EPAS): Staying in control, managing the flight, preventing mid-air collisions and coping with weather."

"2nd Prize - 5,000 €:   Awarded to the PocketFMS Foundation for EasyVFR 4 which provides a complete solution for flight preparation, route planning, and flight navigation.  EasyVFR 4 helps pilots to manage the flight and reduce the risk of mid-air collisions through the provision of planning tools that also enable the identification of different types of airspace and links to relevant NOTAMs.  It also helps pilots to cope with weather by providing weather graphics on the display in the cockpit. "
