after a flight or at home when planning al flight EV4 770 is crashing very often
Thanks for reporting this, Marcel. I'm sorry that you have had this difficulty! Stability and reliability are two very important aspects and i know Rob continues to try to improve both. While I cannot deny that we do still get occasional reports of crashes, your experience here does seem to be worse than the general experience we hear about, so I am interested to try to understand why this might be.
In the title of your post you associate the crashes with trying to turn off the App. It might help narrow down the problem if you could please tell us what hardware you are running the App on, and exactly what steps you have taken just before the crashes happen? Are you still in Flight Mode or are they all in Planning Mode? Is your device connected to any Electronic Conspicuity system when th crashes occur? (probably not as you say the crashes happen when you have been planning a flight). Can you identify any common factors at all between the circumstances when the crashes occur? Is 770 the first version of EV4 you have been using, or have you previously been testing earlier versions and are finding 770 less reliable than the earlier ones you have used?
Best Regards
Hi Stewart,
i am a beta tester from 07 April 2019, and have always updated the latest versions.
I sometimes still using EV 3.97: works perfect; loading sequences are very quick comparing with 4.0. ( 4.0 is too slow in my opinion).
I am using a iPadAir2 Cellular with 64GB and built in GPS . Memory available ca 34GB.
There are no other devices connected in planning mode or in flight mode; only WIFI when available.
WIFI is switched off before flying.
When in planning mode: I used the buttons safe route/stop route. Then iPad button double click and sliding the App to the border of my screen.
Unpredictable but too often I get the message "Evfr4.0 has crashed, do you want to report yes no". Sometimes a message appears that "there is not enough memory" for one second
This also happens unpredictable but too often after flying when closing down: push te ARR button, then safe route then stop route then double click iPad button then sliding the App.
When starting EV4.0 again, flights are stored local and after switching on WIFI, also in the cloud. So no problem there
The first time this happens in flight crashed in Flight: after restarting the flight could be openend and navigation was going on as usual. All previous versions of EV 4.0 sometimes crashed during shutdown, but never in flight. I attributed that to the beta version. The reason I only report this now is the crash in flight. That makes me feel unsafe.
Other remarks:
when this happens in planning mode, I switched to the TestFlight icon and reload the latest version?
I still notice al small yellow dot on the EasyVFR4 icon. See picture.
Route leg: to show magnetic track and distance in the magenta line would be nice....
Breadcrumb files: they are stored in day sequence number 31->01; not by the complete date month year. This requires a lot of scrolling...
Terrain NL (south Limburg) is only loading after zooming in.
Today there are no crashing problems (when you finally decided to go to the dentist the pain is over....)
So far,
Best regards, Marcel
Thanks for that comprehensive description, Marcel. I hope that might give Rob some ideas to look at. I appreciate that crashes in flight are inevitably worrying.
By way of comparison, I have made 3 flights on Sunday and today, total about 2 hrs, with no crashes at any stage (in flight or closing down) on my iPhone 11 and my Huawei Android tablet (both running all through all 3 flights), whereas my old Asus tablet running 3.97 crashed 2 (or was it 3?) times! Unfortunately I don't have an iPad to test on (even mini is too big for my cockpit). Have you tried fully powering don the iPad and then rebooting it immediately before starting EV for your flight? That might indicate whether there is some other App still running in the background that is causing unusual behaviour by EV4?
VBR
Hi Marcel,
There is indeed a known issue where TestFlight reports a crash when easyVFR4 is shutdown. Upcoming version has an attempt to fix that (we're not sure what exactly is causing the testflight report, so its a bit of a while guess ;-)).
Version 4.0.770 did introduce an instability, I expect the upcoming version to be much more stable again, sorry for the inconvenience.
The yellow dot next to EV4 icon is an indication you downloaded it via testflight, not via the appstore. For testflight-distributed apps this is normal.
Thx for the reports, please keep them coming!
