Question GPX import and hiding NOTAMs

Hi all - I just transitioned from using EVFR UK basic to EVFR 4 (as an 'essentials' user) and I love what I see so far! Apart from a couple of crashes while downloading the initial dataset, it looks very slick and user friendly. I just have a couple of questions though, maybe someone can help me out?

- I prefer to create flight plans in GPX format and then import them, rather than by clicking on the map. Is there a way to import GPX files in EVFR 4?

- I also like to hide NOTAMs from the map once I've planned my flight. Is there a way to do this too?

Thanks very much!

Hi George,

You should be able to import gpx routes by simply tapping on them (for example in the dropbox app that I normally use for these kind of exchanges) and then choose to "export" or "share" it (depends on if you are using Android or Apple how its exactly named). You should then get a list of apps that support the gpx format, and one of these is EasyVFR4. When you tap EasyVFR4 then from that list the gpx file will be imported.

You can hide NOTAMS by tapping in at the centre of a NOTAM circle on the map; you get a list of all NOTAMS applicable for that location, and on the right side are two options to hide or delete the NOTAM.

Thanks for the reply Rob - ah yes, I can now import them that way. It doesn't look like there's a way to access them from the menu once I've done that though - do I have to import from Dropbox each time I want to fly the route?

I also had issues with the app crashing after an import. It opens fine, and the route appears, so I clicked 'confirm changes' to set it as active. If I then access any of the menus in the app (e.g. the 'My EasyVFR' menu), I get a crash when I click the 'tick' symbol to exit the menu.

Ah OK - thanks, I can hide individual NOTAMs now. Just for feedback though - I much prefer the 'show on map' option from the old EasyVFR basic. I like to have the map clear of all NOTAMs once I've reviewed them along my route - this option did a great job of de-cluttering the display in the old version 😊

Further feedback - it would be great to have an option to delete breadcrumbs, along with a way of stopping the app from recording them. I often open the app to plan flights, and end up having a massive list of useless breadcrumb files that I need to delete manually (in the old version, which I guess won't change) or that stick around endlessly in the new version. Maybe there's a directory somewhere that I can periodically clear?

Cheers!

Hi George,

I tried to reproduce your crashings, but it all worked ok. Now I did test with the upcoming cersion, and for that we did spend a lot of time trying to iron out a few instability issues, specially on Android, so maybe that work has fixed your crashing too. But just to be sure, can you tell me what device you are using, and could you maybe email a gpx file that caused a crash for you to team at easyvfr4 dot aero?

The Essentials version indeed doesn’t have a way to save routes that are imported this way, sorry. I do realize there is no simple complete textual notam briefing in EV4 Essentials while there was one in EasyVF4 3 Basic. I need to discuss this with my team; to be honest for the moment I am thinking about adding that to the EasyVFR4 Live tier so that (in our opinion very affortable) creates another incentive for a user to subscribe to that ;-).

Did you already see EV4 has 3 mapviews? One is a navigation view, the second a notam view and the third a weather view. You can switch these views by using the maplayer menu (bottom left). The notam and weather mapview use a gray map except for the data they focus on (notams and weather respectively).

also note that the Navigation view will also show notams that are about airspaces, even if the NOTAMS On Map option is off for this navigation mapview. This is part of the smartmap feature in ev4, and cleans up the navigation mapview enormous while adding a great protection against notam-ed airspace infringements.

you can delete breadcrumbs using menu->system->tracklogs; select the breadcrumbs you want to delete, choose the breadcrumbs options button (second top right) and choose [delete breadcrumbs] from there.

Thanks for the reply Rob - yes, I was getting it quite consistently yesterday, but today it's not behaving quite the same! Still, I am getting pretty frequent crashes when dealing with any of my GPX files. The way I'm now producing them is by importing the GPX from dropbox, pressing 'confirm changes' on the route window, and then just waiting for about 30 seconds in the map view.

Sure, I'll send an email over. I'm using a Moto G9 Play - not the fanciest phone, but it's pretty capable and seems to run the EasyVFR 4 app itself with good performance. Running Android 11. I only have the UK dataset downloaded.

The Essentials version indeed doesn’t have a way to save routes that are imported this way, sorry.

No worries! It persists the route when the app closes, which is good enough (and safe enough in case I need to restart the app in flight which is what matters).

I do realize there is no simple complete textual notam briefing in EV4 Essentials while there was one in EasyVF4 3 Basic...

Yes, I think EV4 is fine here too, I'm just used to the old version I think. And yes, I will consider upgrading, I really like what I see so far! I've been a user for a few years now and I think you're doing a great job with the app.

Re: the breadcrumbs, I can see and select them in the list, but when I click the option at the top, I just see an empty menu come up:

Thanks again for your help!

I've been able to replicate what you are showing, George. It appears that at present the option to delete breadcrumbs (and  use a range of other breadcrumb tools) is only available in the Live and Pro levels. I will bring this to Rob's attention.

George, in the latest release of EasyVFR Essential  the ability to delete breadcrumb files has been added, and a number of crash problems have also been fixed, so I very strongly recommend that you update to the latest version ASAP.

Hi Pawel,

Importing routes in the .gpx format is supported in EasyVFR but logs, breadcrumbs, and other information are not. Also, .gpx has many variants in how routes are described in the file. Are you able to share the .gpx file with us? Additionally, it would be helpful if you could let us know which tool you used to create the .gpx file.

I have just sent you an email you can reply to with the file attached.

Cheers,
Tim
