Unfortunately, the Samsung S3 or S4 you are recommending are both too large for my cockpit layout.

Do you have any android 7" or max 8" hardware experience, i.e. a 7" tablet e4 is running on? I need to purchase a 64 bit tablet.

E4 looks too good on  the PC for not trying it in the air...

Thanks

Albrecht

8" Android devices are become more and more a problem unfortunately. However, they Huawei M5 8" is a great machine, we use it on a daily basis and I know quite a few friends how do the same.

I tried unsuccessfully to install e4 on my ASUS 7" tablet which runs in my cockpit as backup with e3.97. After having e4 installed on my laptop for flight planning at home I would have liked to test it in the air - but without luck.

@bdohleweb-de

Hi Dohle,

Welcome to the forum!

Which ASUS 7 do you have? If you have the Asus MeMO Pad HD 7, it is fit for EasyVFR 3. But it has an 32-bit CPU architecture and 1 GB of RAM.

For EasyVFR 4 the minimum requirements are:

Apple iOS

Minimum requirements: 64-bit, 2GB RAM. effectively iPad Air 2 and higher, ipad Mini 4 and higher, iPhone 6S and higher.

Android

Minimum requirements: 64-bit, 2GB RAM. Android 7.0 and higher is advised.

Windows desktop

Minimum requirements: 32-bit, 2GB RAM, Windows 7 and higher is advised.

MacOS

Currently not available due to 64bit porting.

I confirm, Huawei MediaPad M5 is very great, i recently buy it when my nexus7 2013 battery has collapsed. The screen is 8,4" with 16/10 format which is not so far from a 7" screen

I'm very happy with my Samsung Tab S2. Although it's 8" it is quite compact and I have yet to find a 7" tablet that is smaller physically. The great thing about the S2 is the AMOLED screen which is a tremendous display even in sunlight. I usually have brightness set halfway and that's plenty even with my plexiglass cockpit roof. It's WiFi connected to a PilotAware which provides both GPS and traffic information over GDL90. If necessary, the Tab S2 internal GPS works fine too.

do i understand right that you are using both Samsung Tab S2 and Huawei MediaPad M5 with EVFR4? If that is so I rather get one of these than continuing with the 32-bit Asus 7".

Well, I only use the Samsung Tab S2. The other Rob (guru Rob that is) uses the Huawei ?

I had a Asus Memo Pad for EV3 and like you needed a new device that was if possible no bigger than the Memo Pad as I am very tight for space on my panel too (especially the vertical dimension in Landscape mode). I chose the Huawei M5 because it is not much bigger physically than teh Asus but has a considerably larger screen,

Huawei dimensions (in landscape) -rough with a ruler, not from specs:

Body - 212mm wide, 125mm high, 6mm thick

Screen - 180 mm wide, 118mm high

Hi,

My Huawei T3 has just died, I'm thinking of getting the M5 8" lite, it has 3Gb ram. Is this a suitable tablet? I'm not interested in ipad or spending a fortune on 1 so just checking

My 8" M5 seems fine (providing US don't cut Huawei off from Google!) but I have no experience of the M5 lite. Specs show a lower screen resolution and 32GB in strad of 64GB ROM - I only have about 6 of 64GB currently free. Not sure how the processors compare, either - no mention of processor chips on the Huawei comparison tool.

Thanks I'm tempted with waiting for black Friday see what deals crop up, I'm using my s9+ for now so I'm in no huge rush

Has it been determined whether the M5 8 'Lite' is suitable for EV4?

@bob-ivisonntlworld-com

Bob, can you get your hands on an 8" m5 lite? Over here they sell only the 10". Is price difference with the M5 Pro 8" significant? The M5 pro works really good IMHO.

Hi Rob,

The Lite version seems to be readily available here in the UK at about £200 the full M5 is about £270.

I maybe tempted to get one. The spec I've seen seems to be sufficient to run EV4 but you never know until you try it.

I decided since the M5 8" lite is now on a black Friday deal I'd get 1.

So far, I can only say, ev4 loads fine, looks fine, operates normally, remember this is on a 3GB Ram version.

I've not flown with it yet but I'm happy with the lite version and judging by the weather and my aircraft based at a grass strip I highly doubt I will fly this century anyway.

Thanks for the update, Daren.

Any chance of fitting floats to your aircraft ? ?

Please let us know how it goes when you can fly with it. Do you know if it has the same screen technology as the "full-fat" M5 ?

No the screen is lower resolution, but it is not noticeable with ev4

Hi Stu,

I have the Lite version too now. I have reported to Rob that all works fine although not blisteringly fast it will do the job.. I haven't encountered any issues yet that would put me off. All the updates are loading fine. I haven't used in the cockpit yet but have been on a couple of long car journeys and all is well. Haven't found the screen resolution an issue..

So far I'm happy,  so long as ev4 does not become too ram intensive in  the future then this looks like a good tablet for the price. As Bob stated it's not blistering fast but it's a marked speed increase from my T3 and only slightly slower than my s9+ at drawing the map.

Thanks, that all sounds very good news. Depending on how Rob has done it, I think the lower resolution should help keep the speed up and compensate if the processor is not as fast. I was wondering how screen brightness/contrast compare but I suppose that is hard to judge except by having both side-by-side.

Hi guys,

Interesting to read that the Huawei M5 lite suits your needs. We are working on a benchmark test setup to compare all devices on performance. I do not had the change yet to test the Huawei M5 Lite. I did test the Huawei M5 8 inch; the Samsung tab S4 and tab S6; iPad mini 4; iPad Pro 12.

In this benchmark test, the calculation time until visible on screen for multiple use cases in a strick configuration is measured. By adding up those durations we get the benchmark score for a device.

I will soon share the first results.

Cheers,
Tim
