Question EasyVFR4 not running on Win10

I've recently got a new laptop (albeit a work one). I've installed EVFR4 (v4.2) but when I try to run it I get an initial window titled "EasyVFR4" but it closes after a couple seconds with no warnings/ errors etc.

I'm running Windows 10 version 22H2 (build 19045). It could be my work VPN/ AV blocking it but strange is that it ran fine on my old laptop.

Anyone any thoughts/ ideas?

Had a further look at Event Viewer and it would appear I'm getting KERNALBASE.DLL errors.

When I look at this file it has the following properties

I wonder if a recent Windows update has resulted in this file being updated and its now broken EVFR4.

Any ideas?

Hi Alexander,

Thank you for sharing. I apologize that you encountered an error on your work PC. This is not a known issue. EasyVFR 4.2 is compatible with both the latest versions of Windows 10 and 11. I will inquire and respond to the email you sent to us.

Cheers,
Tim

Cheers Tim. I got a colleague to try it too and he got the same result. Whilst I'm no PC wizard anymore, I can't immediately see why its not launching but there's lots of google hits about kernelbase.dll errors when launching various programs.

They talk about permissions (I have admin rights), corruption of the dll (my colleague and I get the same problem but we are on same windows version/ update), user profile corruptions (again colleague and myself get same problem), etc

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Hi Tim,

So a further update from my testing. Not sure how much use it is or or not.

Anyway, I still have my old laptop and EVFR4 runs fine on that. It was initially the old version 4.1.422. So I removed and updated with the later v4.2.000 currently available from the download page. This also ran without issue, other than I couldn't get past the "checking credentials" page as this was a new install, but this may be a firewall or similar issue. But importantly I was getting further than I am on my new laptop.

I checked the Kernelbase.dll file version and it was an earlier version(10.0.19041.3930). Windows very quickly decided it needed to install updates and so I let it. When it had finished the kernelbase.dll file version had been updated to the same as my new laptop (10.0.19041.3996).

Interestingly, EVFR still ran, although I was still not able to get past the checking credentials page.

My colleague also checked with his home laptop running Win11 and it ran fine, i.e. got the language selection page up which is more than I can with my new laptop. It has a higher still version of kernelbase.dll. His work laptop which has the same version of kernelbase.dll as mine also would not run EVFR.

Both his and my laptop are reporting the same exception code 0xe06d7363 and Fault offset 0x0013fa72

Unfortunately I don't have the installers for previous versions of EVFR like 4.1.422 to see if that would work on my new laptop. Are you able to give me access to a previous version so I can test?

Beyond this we are stumped as to why these newer laptops are not working. The only thought is that if it was run successfully with an older version of EVFR with a previous version of Kernelbase.dll and this somehow set some registry settings or similar this may explain why EVFR runs on my old laptop even though it has now updated windows to the later version.

Hope all that makes sense.

Hi Alexalder,

Most of the time when easyvfr 4 for windows has problems it is caused by the graphical hardware and/or driver. I don't know how kernelbase.dll plays a role here, but it could well be the actual cause has nothing to do with that dll.

I googled a bit, and my suspicion about the graphical hardware and/or driver gets stronger after reading https://windowsforum.com/threads/kernelbase-dll-game-crash-after-update-solved.335673/ ; the solution there was to update the graphical drivers.

So my best guess would be to see if there are new or different drivers available for your video card, sorry for the trouble.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the reply. I tried updating any drivers but sadly this has not resolved my problem. I'm still getting the exact same fault, exception code and fault offset (whatever this is...) as before.

Would you be able to send me a link to a previous version of EVFR4, say 4.0 or 4.1 so I can test if the same happens with that? Other than that I'm stuffed and out of ideas...

Hi Alexalder,

Here are some older versions:

Do you happen to have both and integrated and dedicated GPU? If so, you could try changing the graphics preferences for EasyVFR 4:

  1. How to Enable Graphics Performance Preferences on Windows 10 (asapguide.com)
  2. When the app is not listed you can add it yourself by selecting the EasyVFR4.exe file: "C:\Program Files (x86)\EasyVFR4\EasyVFR4.exe"
  3. See if setting it to High Performance makes a difference.

Cheers,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Sorry its been a while in responding. I've tried what you suggested and sadly the same result. I think I will have to load it up on an old laptop at home instead and see what happens.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Tim,

I'm looking again at this issue. One thing a few website suggest is it could be redistributable packages like Visual C++ not being installed. Are there any pre-requisite packages that need to be installed for EVFR4 to work?

Hi Alex,

There are no redistributable packages like Visual C++ runtimes needed, sorry.
